To be honest, the shooting felt like it left a lot to be desired, but the sequel, Ties that Bind, did improve on that quite a bit I think. I remember the game fondly, particularly because it did have the liberal choice of allowing you to play the entire game in first or third person, something I wouldn't personally experience again until Oblivion. Sometimes it's just a cool setting for an action game.
I honestly don't think every game that takes on horror themes HAS to be scary. It's a combination First Person/Third Person shooter with horror themes, though the game takes a much more action orientated approach, which kind of downplays any horror aspect. I first discovered the sequel as a demo on another PS2 Midway game (can't remember which one though)
I don't see the games talked about very often.
